  1. KWL chart
KWL Chart- The Dallas World Aquarium
What we knew?

What we wanted to know?

What we learned?

There are many types of birds at the aquarium.

  • Some fish live in a dark environment.
  • They have a large variety of animals there besides just aquarium wildlife.
  • They have this really awesome walk through exhibit where you can see sharks as they swim around and interact with one another.
❖      What animals does the aquarium have that are not native to Texas? To the United States?

❖      Do they have jellyfish?

❖      How many types of birds do they have?

❖      Do they have large cats there?

❖      How do they feed birds?

❖      Do they have different kinds of reptiles?

❖      How can the penguins survive in hot Texas weather?

❖      The stingray looks very slippery from the top and was not as scary as I thought it would.

❖      The aquarium is divided into different sections that they categorize the animals into. At the beginning you have a lot of birds just flying around. In the middle of the aquarium you have a lot of different types of fish, jellyfish, sting rays, and reptiles. Lastly, there are large cats as well. There was a big panther that paced back and forth a lot.

❖      The aquarium has a smaller section that is for the sloth forest exhibit. I did not know that they had these there!

❖      Penguins are not found only in cold climates, such as Antarctica. We learned that only a few species of penguin live so far south. Several species are found in the temperate zone.

❖      We learned that the Ocelot has large eyes that allow for acute binocular vision adapted for hunting.

❖      We learned that flamingos feed with their heads upside down, bill in the water, with the tongue pumping water through the bill to sift out food

  1. Group Reflection- explain how this experience will affect your future classroom on your Learning Blog.

I think that this experience definitely helped us understand the importance of taking field trips and applying real life experiences to our teaching. These interactive experiences enable students to make necessary connections which in turn allow them to understand concepts in deeper way. If going on field trips are not an option or in budget, there are a lot of different options a teacher can choose that can incorporate real world connections. One option is a virtual field trip that can be taken from the classroom and another option can be observing something that can be found outside of the school on the playground. These examples would incorporate both a real world connect as well as technology.
